« To speak of "good taste" invariably turns out to mean either one's own taste, or perhaps the taste of those that one admires most... Good design means something more permanent and more fundamental than being tasteful.»

Vernacular it is...

this unique ceiling treatment was chosen to add drama and break -up the monotony of the large North-facing surface
Accentuated height and drama are added through the design of a diamond patterned ceiling (mediums-Ralph Lauren Glaze and Pearlaescent Paint)

In the examples above and below points of interest are highlighted through the space by the versatile employment of lighting, fabrics and wall/furniture finishes, as well as key accessories.

Color coordination is always of top priority as it sets the tonality for the desired mood. The utalization of warm, inviting colors in earthy, jewel-like hues aids in bringing various parts of the space into a visual harmony, which creates the feeling of comfort and relaxation.

An example of creating athmospheric mood through the appropriate selection of finishes.
A combination of gold leaf and marblizing/aging of wall niches as well as disstressing/design application on furniture.
This is an example of casual style which mixes antique with faux elements (Doric-style column in disstressed finish) to create a relaxed ambiance.

The following two examples deal with the Problem of Giving Small, Limited Spaces Personality and Comfort without overwhelming them with unnecessary color and exaggerated pattern which often makes such spaces feel claustrophobic.

A Fresco-type Freehand Bamboo Design done in neutral colors which only enchance and do not interfere with the overall Color Scheme of this Master Bathroom.
The rest of the materials and finishes in the same Master Bathroom complete the Coherent Design theme which bring to mind Asiatic Aesthetics.
The Antique Distressed Wall Finish in this Guest Powder Room was achieved through the application of multiple glazes. This approach was appropriate for the tiny space as it gave it the much needed Depth and Luminocity.
In this view of the same Powder Room a close-up of the wall finish shows the "Faux Aging" of the surface where paint appears to have peeled away by time and wear. This kind of Distressing is meant to evoke the feeling of a Time-tested European Bed and Breakfast.

The following is an example of applying a Splash of Color and a Bold Pattern to a Limited Wall Space which serves as a Focal Point upon entering this private Residence and Accentuates the Warm Color Scheme of the Surrounding Finishes.

This is a Leopard Print Wall Finish done in multiple glazes of brown hues.
